Collaborative program promotes clinician education and peer-to-peer exchange

SAN ANTONIO, October 9, 2015 – Acelity announced today the launch of its new Centres of Expertise (CoE) education program, an innovative collaborative platform designed to provide a diverse medical education curriculum focused on disease state management and related surgical procedures. The CoE program was announced at the Acelity Make Better Summit in Madrid, one of a series of global educational events comprised of peer-to-peer exchange in which clinician stakeholders focus on the care and outcomes of patients living with wounds.

The Acelity CoE program recognizes academic centers that provide exceptional care and are dedicated to continuously improving patient safety and clinical outcomes through research, innovation and development. Each center, chosen against a set of pre-approved criteria, will serve as a regional, national and international resource for specific disease management and surgical and procedural expertise.

The first CoE program has been launched at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam and focuses on challenging abdominal wall and colorectal surgery, training clinicians in disease management and related surgical techniques. In addition, the Centre will commence research in a related area through a two-year research fellowship and support a surgical clinical fellowship. The first training opportunity is expected later this month with additional programs in development for 2016.

“Ongoing education and training for surgeons and clinicians helps them continuously improve their practice and their care of patients,” said Marja Boermeester, professor of surgery, Academic Medical Center, Amsterdam. “Our goal with the Acelity Centre of Expertise in Amsterdam is to provide a best-in-class platform to support clinicians desiring to learn the latest innovative surgical techniques and product applications for abdominal wall and colorectal surgery.”

Surgical specialty centers currently in development include plastic surgery, breast surgery, complex wounds, orthopaedic surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and vascular surgery. Each CoE will offer varied programs, including but not limited to preceptorships, surgical master classes and bioskills cadaver labs.

“The Centres of Expertise program brings to life Acelity’s mission to truly improve the practice of medicine by ensuring that surgeons and clinicians are aware of cutting-edge solutions and procedures,” said Laura Piccinini, president, Acelity Developed Markets. “As an industry leader in wound care and regenerative medicine, we are uniquely positioned to lead this integrated medical education platform and appreciate the responsibility we have to ensure clinicians are supported as they strive to provide better care for their patients.”

The Acelity Make Better Summit in Madrid is the fourth in a series of global educational events in which stakeholders will discuss and learn about trends in the healthcare system, latest innovations in the management of surgical and non-surgical wounds, advanced surgical procedures and the health economic impact of innovative approaches. The first three Make Better Summits were held in Rome, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Chicago.
